The Third Conditional describes unreal past situations — imagining a different outcome to something that has already happened. It expresses regret, criticism, or speculation about the past.
Standard
If + past perfect (had + PP), would have + past participle
Result variations
could have / might have instead of would have
Inverted form (formal)
Had + S + PP, ... (omit 'if'; invert subject and had)
